Sans Culottes Font

Sans Culottes by Keith Bates of K-Type is a free eroded display font built from stout, old-style letterforms with compact proportions. Its dark, broad strokes and blunt serifs are eaten away by scattered chips, scratches, and larger patches of wear. The damage stays deliberately uneven throughout.

Vintage letterpress and pulp poster design are its clearest territory, making it useful for gig posters, album covers, and rugged beverage labels that benefit from visibly battered lettering. On T-shirts and historical event graphics, the broken surface can function like printed texture, linking those otherwise different applications through a convincing sense of age and rough production.

Sans Culottes is loosely based on Phillip Cavette’s 1999 font 4990810. It has redrawn outlines, more distress marks, a more regular vertical aspect, and no baseline irregularity. It includes lowercase letters, accented characters, and dingbats.
