Mutter Krause Font

Mutter Krause by Peter Wiegel is a free italic serif font with a lively, old-fashioned bearing. Its tall letters lean forward through broad curves and sharply tapered strokes. Uneven joins and flared endings give the forms the warmth of hand-cut display lettering.

It is especially convincing for pub signage, where its sweeping shapes suggest a long-established local name. The same informal period character suits food packaging, festival posters, and historical publishing with a folk or regional subject. On labels, it can become a decorative emblem rather than neutral lettering.

This font was built for the reconstruction of the 1929 silent film “Mutter Krausens Fahrt ins Glück,” where it is used for missing intertitles. The font was redrawn from the original intertitles.
