Cardo Italic by David J. Perry is a free italic serif font with a scholarly, classical bearing. Its broad capitals combine strong thick-thin contrast with long, tapering curves, restrained sharp serifs, and fluid lowercase forms marked by sweeping descenders and lively entry strokes.

It can give a book cover or museum title the air of an old printed edition. The elegant slant also fits literary journals, concert programs, and invitations, where the changing stroke weight offers ceremony without excessive ornament. Book publishing is its most convincing setting, particularly for serious historical or humanist subjects.
